Birding the bottomland forests near Vicksburg, Miss.

Audubon is working with Mississippi State University to document the economic value of birding and other forms of nature tourism. You can help by taking the online Great River Birding Trail survey.

Your information will help us protect the healthy habitats on which birding -- and bird populations -- depend . The Great River Birding Trail is an online guide to hundreds of birding and wildlife-watching locations from the headwaters of the Mississippi at Lake Itasca, Minn., to the river's mouth at the Gulf of Mexico in Louisiana, following the scenic Great River Road on both sides of the waterway. Most of these sites help sustain breeding, migrating or wintering birds.

Dr. Stephen Grado and Marcus Measells, at Mississippi State University's Forest and Wildlife Research Center, prepared the survey. They are particularly interested information from birders visiting sites in Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee.

See below for two new reports on the economics of birding and wildlife watching nationwide.
